A footed bucchero ceramic vessel designed by Gio Ponti and produced by Costantino for the Neoponti collection. The flared upper body is cut with a deep V-notch at the rim, drawing into a pinched waist above a full pear-shaped lower body, the whole raised on four slender legs that continue up onto the body as raised ridges. This is the larger of the two sizes in which the form was produced. Finished in a satin-black glaze with faint horizontal throwing lines across the body, a record of the hand-thrown process, and unglazed terracotta at the leg tips.
Ponti developed the Gubbio series with the Umbrian ceramicist Carlo Alberto Rossi, reworking the black earthenware of pre-Roman Etruria into forms that read as unmistakably modern. Costantino returned the designs to production in 1997 as authorized Neoponti re-editions, since discontinued.
In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restoration; one small glaze imperfection on the body, slightly larger than a pinprick and visible only on close inspection. Marked NEOPONTI GIO PONTI 1940 on the underside, carrying the original design date rather than the production year of 1997. Accompanied by its original Neoponti booklet and manufacturer's box.
