An incredible hand-painted porcelain 1:4.5 scale version of Alessandro Mendini's iconic 1978 Poltrona di Proust chair design produced by Edition Vitra Design Museum in 1996. Originally intended to be an edition of 500, only 50-100 were produced because of the exquisite care required by Atelier Mendini to hand-paint each one. The porcelain blanks were produced by the Vitra Design Museum and delivered to Mendini's Milan studio. The hand-painted decoration was designed by projecting a slide of a Paul Signac painting on to the surface, and the dots were painted directly on to the furniture.
Mendini's Poltrona di Proust is postmodernism at its best: Baroque furniture, decoration from Pointillist painting, with a title from French literature. Mendini ranks amongst the most important designers of the 1980s-2000s, having won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro multiple times, as well as producing work for Philips, Swarovski, Swatch, Supreme, and Bisazza.
