A very rare example of Gio Ponti's extraordinary design legacy. This mid-century Italian Modern designed console table features laminate tiles by Ponti's frequent partner, Paolo de Poli, and was produced in 1998 by the short-lived Neoponti/Costantino. In the 1990s, Neoponti briefly made licensed reproductions of Ponti's work, including this design from 1940. The table is constructed using a medium-colored brown wood with an inlaid composite tile tabletop in blue, off-white and shades of brown. The inlaid laminate tiles continue on the side and down the legs of the piece to give it a subtle but light colorfulness.
Among the most prolific of twentieth-century designers, Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was trained as an architect and made major contributions to the decorative arts, including designing buildings, cars, machinery, and appliances. His influence on the generations of Italian architects and designers who followed him can not be overstated.
In excellent condition with very light wear, including four 1/4" marks to wood, one tiny mark on table top, and a few small missing pieces of mortar. (See photos for detail.) Marked on inset tile on leg "Neoponti Gio Ponti 1940".
