Designed for B&B Italia in 1986, Antonio Citterio's Sity sofa system was awarded Italy's most prestigious design award, the Compasso D'Oro, in 1987. This perfectly postmodern sectional manages to be both minimalist in design and maximalist in color (and size)! The steel frame and seats are covered in a black upholstery with geometric designs and flowers, while the back rests and throw pillows are covered in the same design in bright pink and the arm rests are upholstered in black leather. B&B's founder, Piero Ambrogio Busnell, once said, "The Sity defined an era. It marked the beginning of a new era in which people began to stretch out. The Sity is made specifically to stretch out in. Home is for resting. Relaxing." One of the world's most respected designers, Citterio produced work for Flexform, Flos, Hermès, Iittala, Kartell, Maxalto, and Vitra.
In excellent condition with very little use by its single owner, who purchased it from B&B Italia in New York City in the late 1980s. All original and all pieces are signed. Previous owner stored it in a formal living room, which saw very little use, so it is in extraordinary condition, with only slight wear to one corner and a few tiny paint spots on the back of one corner.
The set, which can easily be broken up into smaller configurations to fit different rooms/homes, includes five separate pieces, five cushions, and eight pillows, as well as two adjustable and moveable headrests. Pieces measure 86" x 54" with a leather wrapped arm, 33" x 38", 39" x 38", 65" x 38" and 68" x 38" with other leather wrapped arm. Minimalistic form and perfect craftsmanship!
