Along with his iconic Seconda chair, Mario Botta's Quinta chair for Alias is postmodern furniture at its very finest: drastically scaled down to a tense, thin metal outline, it shares the same structural rigour and continuous frame as Thonet and Bauhaus tubular-steel chairs designed in the 1920s. Botta said "It was made so that every connection point is clear; nothing is hidden." Designed in 1985 with a frame of steel tubing and perforated and folded steel seat and back, the chair is as much architecture as seating. The folding of the seat and back allow for flex in the material as you sit or lean back, adding an unexpected comfort to the structural beautify. And the chair's architectural lines are very reminiscent of Botta's design for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
